Diabetes Center
The
Cape Regional Medical Center Diabetes Center
is certified by The Joint Commission with the Gold Seal of Approval for its Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Program and is accredited by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education. Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. One benefit of compliance with the National Standards is greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered to people with diabetes. Program participants are taught, as needed, self-care skills that allow better management of their diabetes treatment regimen. Diabetes is a serious, widespread but controllable disease. It is the
sixth leading cause of death in the United States and affects almost 21

amputation not related to trauma. It is also the number one cause of
acquired blindness, and the number one cause of kidney disease leading
to dialysis in the United States.
Diabetes is also a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death in this country. About 65 percent of people with diabetes die from cardiovascular disease.
