Image Guided Radiation Therapy

Image Guided Radiation Therapy

As cancer treatments continue to evolve and advance, Cape Regional Medical Center stands at the forefront of today's technology with the introduction of Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT).

This sophisticated technology allows radiation to be delivered to cancerous tumors with more precision, control and effectiveness than has ever been possible before. IGRT achieves this precision by performing daily CT scans of the patient at the start of each treatment. This allows the exact size, location and coordinates of the tumor to be pinpointed immediately before delivering the radiation therapy.

By providing a 360 degree image of the tumor just prior to treatment, IGRT detects any tumor movement and adjusts the radiation beams accordingly. This allows the radiation to be delivered at a higher dose to the targeted area while minimizing the volume of the healthy tissue exposed to radiation during treatment. The result is better cure rates and fewer side effects than ever before.
